Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Chase Anderson, OF Brad Snyder

Atlanta Braves
OF Stefan Gartrell (Campeche (Mexican))
Released: 2B Fernando de los Santos
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Cory Rasmus
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Chase Anselment

Baltimore Orioles
LHP Zach Braddock
Recalled: RHP Steve Johnson, 2B Ryan Flaherty
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Kevin Gausman

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Eric Beaulac, LHP Daniel Schlereth, OF Glynn Davis
Reinstated from DL: RHP Dan Klein, LHP Zach Braddock, OF Jason Pridie

The most advanced college pitchers from the 2012 draft, such as No. 4 overall pick Kevin Gausman, have raced to the big leagues well ahead of the pace established by pitchers on the accelerated program in recent drafts. Gausman, Michael Roth (Angels, ninth round), Michael Wacha (Cardinals, 19th overall) and Alex Wood (Braves, second round) all went from last year’s draft to the majors before the end of May. The fastest-to-the-majors pitchers from the 2010 (Josh Spence) and '11 (Trevor Bauer) drafts both debuted in late June.

Gausman has been hit hard in his first two starts for Baltimore, allowing 11 runs in nine innings, though if he returns to the minors this season it probably won’t be at Double-A Bowie, where he made eight starts and went 2-4, 3.11 with nearly 10 times as many strikeouts (49) as walks (five).

Boston Red Sox
LHP Rafael Perez (released by Twins, May 17)
Recalled: RHP Alfredo Aceves, SS Jose Iglesias, OF Jackie Bradley
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Alfredo Aceves, RHP Alex Wilson, C Ryan Lavarnway
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Pat Light, RHP Nefi Ogando, LHP Will Latimer
Reinstated from DL: RHP Luis Diaz, RHP Oscar Villarreal, LHP Robby Scott, OF Juan Carlos Linares, OF Mitch Maier

Chicago Cubs
C Jair Fernandez
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Alex Burnett
Removed from 40-man: RHP Michael Bowden (outrighted to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Esmailin Caridad, RHP Barret Loux, 3B Josh Vitters, OF Bijan Rademacher
Reinstated from DL: RHP Yao-Lin Wang, C Carlos Escobar

Alex Burnett’s waivers odyssey began at the outset of the 2013 season when the Blue Jays claimed him from the Twins. Subsequent claims landed him with the Orioles and now the Cubs. Burnett has spent so much time in DFA limbo that he’s logged just 12 innings in Triple-A and 2 1/3 in the big leagues.

Chicago White Sox
OF Alex Llanos (released by Royals, May 27), OF Josh Richmond (Florence (Frontier))
Released: LHP Trevor Reckling, LHP Wes Whisler, SS Jean Almanzar
Acquired: LHP Josh Romanski from Yankees for cash considerations
Traded: 2B Drew Garcia to Rockies for cash considerations
Removed from 40-man: SS Angel Sanchez (outrighted to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Nestor Molina, 1B Seth Loman, OF Juan Ramirez
Reinstated from DL: RHP Nestor Molina, LHP Charlie Leesman, LHP Trevor Reckling, OF Jared Mitchell

The Angels identified shortstop Angel Sanchez as a priority minor league free agent last offseason, signing him Oct. 26, but because the White Sox selected him in the Rule 5 draft, he lasted little more than a month with Los Angeles. Sanchez spent most of the 2013 season on the disabled list with a back injury, losing his utility job to Tyler Greene and going unclaimed on waivers when he returned.

Cincinnati Reds
C Chadwick Tromp
Released: 3B Niko Vasquez
Placed on 7-day DL: C Chris Berset
Reinstated from DL: C Konrad Schmidt

The Reds signed teen catcher Chadwick Tromp from Aruba. Check out his promotional video on YouTube.

Cleveland Indians
LHP Scott Barnes, LHP Nick Hagadone
Optioned to Triple-A: 2B Cord Phelps
Option transferred: RHP Chen Lee (Triple-A to low Class A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Robbie Aviles, RHP Owen Dew, LHP Giovanni Soto, 3B Kyle Bellows, OF LeVon Washington
Reinstated from DL: RHP Chen Lee, RHP Mason Radeke, 1B Adam Abraham

Colorado Rockies
RHP Josh Slaats, C C.J. Gillman, SS Tommy Manzella
Acquired: 2B Drew Garcia from White Sox for cash considerations
Recalled: RHP Rob Scahill
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Charlie Blackmon
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Roman Colon, RHP Raul Fernandez, RHP Jesse Meaux, RHP Tim Sexton, 1B Jordan Ribera, 2B Taylor Featherston, OF Brian Humphries
Reinstated from DL: RHP Bobby Cassevah, SS Jason Stolz

A fifth-round pick from Hawaii in 2010, Josh Slaats turned in a strong pro debut in the short-season Northwest League, logging a 1.95 ERA and strikeout rate of 11.7 per nine innings over 32 frames. His control disappeared the following season and hasn’t reappeared since. In nine relief appearances for low Class Asheville this season the 24-year-old had allowed 13 runs on 16 hits over 14 innings, walking seven and striking out 13.

Detroit Tigers
3B Mario Martinez
Placed on 7-day DL: SS Dixon Machado
Reinstated from DL: LHP Casey Crosby, 2B Brandon Douglas

Houston Astros
RHP Brad Peacock
Optioned to Triple-A: OF Robbie Grossman
Placed on 7-day DL: C Ryan McCurdy, 2B Carlos Perdomo
Reinstated from DL: RHP Aaron West, LHP Sergio Escalona

Kansas City Royals
RHP Darwin Castillo, RHP Nick Rogers, LHP John Killen, 1B Rainier Bello, OF Alex Llanos
Recalled: RHP Louis Coleman
Added to 40-man roster: C Adam Moore
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Kelvin Herrera
Reinstated from DL: RHP Matt Murray, RHP Tyler Sample, OF Geulin Beltre

The hardest-throwing reliever in the majors last season with an average fastball velocity of 98.5 mph, Kelvin Herrera encountered serious gopher-ball trouble this season in Kansas City despite throwing nearly as hard (97.8) as he did a year ago. He’s either the unluckiest pitcher in the majors or largely unable to locate his pitches. Case in point: Herrera allowed 19 hits, including eight home runs, in 20 1/3 big league innings prior to being optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

Los Angeles Angels
RHP Spencer Trygg (McAllen (North American))
Released: RHP Johnny Holtman, RHP Kip Wells, C Mark Fleury
Removed from 40-man: RHP Billy Buckner (outrighted to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: C Mark Fleury, OF Scott Cousins, OF Randal Grichuk
Reinstated from DL: RHP Johnny Holtman, RHP Tony Pena, C Jett Bandy, C Mark Fleury, 2B Tommy Field, SS Eric Stamets

Los Angeles Dodgers
C J.R. Towles (released by Cardinals, May 24)
Released: RHP Aris Angeles, RHP Ricardo de la Rosa, RHP Samuel Taveras, C Jesus Flores, 3B Jeff Hunt, SS Justin Boudreaux
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Dee Gordon
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Ralston Cash, RHP Kyle Cofield
Reinstated from DL: RHP Gustavo Gomez, C Eric Smith

Miami Marlins
LHP Dan Jennings
Added to 40-man roster: SS Ed Lucas
Placed on 7-day DL: C Jake Jefferies, 1B Aaron Dudley
Reinstated from DL: C Jake Jefferies, 3B Zack Cox, SS Danny Black

Few big league callups this season will taste as sweet as 31-year-old Ed Lucas’ promotion to the Marlins. A Dartmouth senior who signed with the Royals for $1,000 out of the eighth round of the '04 draft, he toiled for 10 seasons in the minors, accumulating 3,731 plate appearances for 10 different clubs and four organizations. Lucas turned himself from non-prospect to big league utility candidate by hitting .265/.337/.403 in more than 1,400 Triple-A PAs while playing all over the infield.

Incidentally, the Royals hit paydirt with a college-senior shortstop whom they signed for a cool $1,000 in the '03 draft: seventh-rounder Mike Aviles from Concordia (N.Y.).

Milwaukee Brewers
RHP Clay Hensley (released by Reds, May 20)
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Donovan Hand
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Mike Strong, C Dayton Buller, C Brent Dean, C Joey Paciorek
Reinstated from DL: RHP Leonard Lorenzo, RHP Mark Williams, C Adam Weisenburger, 1B Sean Halton, 3B Mike Garza, OF Cole Garner

Minnesota Twins
OF Herbert Tufts
Released: OF Drew Leachman
Recalled: C Chris Herrmann
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Sam Deduno, RHP P.J. Walters
Optioned to Triple-A: 1B Chris Colabello, OF Oswaldo Arcia
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Kyle Davies, RHP Bruce Pugh
Reinstated from DL: RHP Tyler Jones, RHP Tim Shibuya, RHP Anthony Slama, LHP Ryan O’Rourke, LHP Chad Rodgers

New York Mets
Placed on 7-day DL:
LHP Steve Matz
Reinstated from DL: RHP Marco Camarena, RHP Domingo Tapia, C Albert Cordero, OF Brandon Nimmo

After missing all of 2010 and '11 and half of '12 with elbow and shoulder maladies, '09 second-rounder Steve Matz already had logged a career-high 40 2/3 innings for low Class A Savannah this season. His stuff appears to have survived the downtime (10.0 SO/9), so the Mets are hoping he makes a complete, speedy recovery from the blister trouble that recently sent him to the disabled list.

New York Yankees
LHP Josh Romanski to White Sox for cash considerations
Recalled: OF Brennan Boesch
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Dellin Betances
Removed from 40-man: LHP Francisco Rondon (outrighted to Triple-A)

St. Louis Cardinals
LHP Barret Browning, C J.R. Towles
Recalled: RHP Michael Blazek, RHP Victor Marte
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Carlos Martinez
Option transferred: LHP Kevin Siegrist (Double-A to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Eric Fornataro, C Casey Rasmus, OF Chad Huffman, OF Oscar Taveras
Reinstated from DL: SS Greg Garcia, OF Tommy Pham

Correspondent Derrick Goold reports that uber-prospect Oscar Taveras went on the Triple-A Memphis disabled list with a case of ongoing ankle soreness that he attempted to play through for a couple weeks. The 20-year-old hit .317/.351/.480 with four homers in 31 games before injuring his right ankle during a slide into second base.

San Diego Padres
RHP Dan Cortes (released by D-backs, May 21), RHP Fautino de los Santos (re-signed)
Recalled: LHP Tommy Layne
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Tommy Layne, C John Baker

Seattle Mariners
OF Kurt Fleming
Recalled: RHP Hector Noesi, 3B Alex Liddi, SS Carlos Triunfel
Added to 40-man roster: C Jesus Sucre, 2B Nick Franklin
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Brandon Maurer, LHP Lucas Luetge, 2B Dustin Ackley
Designated for assignment: OF Francisco Martinez
Removed from 40-man: 2B Robert Andino (outrighted to Triple-A)
Option transferred: RHP Erasmo Ramirez (Triple-A to Double-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: 2B Keith Werman, OF Leon Landry
Reinstated from DL: RHP Erasmo Ramirez, 2B Patrick Brady, OF Denny Almonte, OF Jabari Henry

Barring a dramatic reversal of fortune for third baseman-turned-center fielder Francisco Martinez (assuming he stays with the organization following his DFA), the best player the Mariners received in the 2011 Doug Fister trade with the Tigers might turn out to be lefty reliever Charlie Furbush. Casper Wells is gone, and erstwhile reliever Chance Ruffin is remaking himself as a starter at Double-A.

As if optioning Dustin Ackley (No. 12 prospect in baseball prior to 2011) and Jesus Montero (No. 6 prior to 2012) to Triple-A Tacoma in rapid succession wasn’t bad news enough for Mariners fans.

Tampa Bay Rays
RHP Alex Colome
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jake Odorizzi
Option transferred: LHP Mike Montgomery (high Class A to Triple-A)
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Jordan Harrison, C Chris Gimenez, 1B Alejandro Segovia
Reinstated from DL: C Luke Bailey, SS Brandon Martin

Texas Rangers
OF Mark Teahen (released by D-backs, May 20)
Recalled: LHP Martin Perez
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Martin Perez
Optioned to Double-A: OF Joe Benson
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Victor Payano
Reinstated from DL: RHP Evan Meek, LHP Brad Mills, OF Nick Williams

As a sign of how far Joe Benson’s prospect stock had sunk, the Rangers were able to claim the Twins’ four-time Top 10 Prospect on waivers despite having one of the lowest waiver priorities in the game based on their strong won-loss record. Minnesota tired of the '06 second-rounder’s slow progress—which included a .187/.261/.297 batting line in 70 career Triple-A games—though he’s a versatile, righty-hitting outfielder with power who got off to a fine start for Double-A Frisco, going 7-for-18 (.389) with four homers in six games. The 25-year-old Benson is on his third and final minor league option this season.

Toronto Blue Jays
1B Balbino Fuenmayor
Recalled: RHP Todd Redmond, RHP Thad Weber
