Minor League Transactions: March 9-15

Minor league spring training camps opened across Arizona and Florida at the end of last week, opening their doors to the flood of 40-man roster players who had been optioned to the minor league side. You'll find 189 examples in this blog post alone.

Please to not assume the optional assignments listed are *guarantees* of Opening Day assignments. Teams have made the designations with MLB, but they are of course subject to change.

An asterisk (*) denotes a case in which a player has signed a minor league deal after either being outrighted from his club's 40-man roster or optioned from the 25-man roster.

Optioned to Double-A: LHP Leyson Septimo
Optioned to high Class A: RHP Yonata Ortega
Optioned to low Class A: RHP Juan Jaime

A Toronto native, Adam Kudryk began the ’08 season with Texarkana (Texas) JC, but he ended it with a torn labrum. Facing surgery and a 12-month recovery period, he headed to Canadian training facility The Baseball Zone to rehab and build arm strength. He spent the ’10 season playing semipro ball in Canada's Intercounty Baseball League, where he made 12 appearances. Last month, the 23-year-old Kudryk hit 90 mph at an MLB Scouting Bureau tryout camp.

A Devil Rays' fourth-round pick in ’04, Matt Spring hit just .210/.278/.369 in seven years in the system, topping 300 plate appearances in a season only once. He's a fundamentally-sound receiver who brings the proverbial intangibles to a minor league club—that is, he works well with kids.

The Twins signed Yancarlos Ortiz out of the Dominican in ’03, but he advanced past Double-A only briefly, appearing in seven games for Triple-A Rochester last season. The 5-foot-9 switch-hitter has managed a career batting line of just .235/.313/.281, but with quickness, sure hands and a strong arm, it's defense that is the 26-year-old's calling card.

RHP Garrett Mock*, LHP Atahualpa Severino*, C Lou Santangelo
RHP Cla Meredith
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Adam Carr, RHP Garrett Mock, LHP Atahualpa Severino
Optioned to low Class A: OF Bryce Harper

Organizations always seek strong defensive catchers and shortstops to help develop their minor league pitchers, and that's no different for the Nationals here with Lou Santangelo. A fourth-rounder from Clemson in ’04, he has plenty of Double-A (238 games) and Triple-A (98) experience, but he's batted just .235/.305/.399 for his career. With Washington, he's clearly behind Jesus Flores, Wilson Ramos and Ivan Rodriguez on the depth chart.
