Minor League Transactions: March 16-22

This time: March 16-22

For the complete record: The asterisks (*) here denote instances of 40-man roster players who have agreed to terms on the minor league portion of their split major league/minor league contracts. These players will have their minimum salary dictated by baseball's Collective Bargaining Agreement.

RHP Ramon Soto

Released by the Athletics in January, Ramon Soto signed with the Red Sox with the intention of converting from catcher to pitcher. Thanks to Sox Prospects.com for the tip.

Chicago Cubs
OF Matt Szczur (re-signed)
Released: RHP Steve Grife, RHP Carlos Rojas, 1B Jake McAloose, OF T.J. Baxter, OF Matt Szczur (subsequently re-signed)

Update: The Cubs agreed to nearly triple fifth-rounder Matt Szczur's bonus amount when he punted football and committed to baseball full time in January. The two parties finalized contract parameters on March 18, with the Cubs deciding the best course of action was to first release and then re-sign Szczur to a new minor league contract. In so inking a second minor league pact with Szczur, they triggered a contract provision that effectively morphs the agreement into a major league deal this winter. [ME. March 25]

Chicago White Sox
RHP Freddy Dolsi*, RHP Lucas Harrell*, RHP Jhonny Nunez*, OF Alejandro De Aza*
Released: RHP Chris Bodishbaugh, C Alexis Fonseca, 1B Jared McDonald, OF Brandon Watson
Traded: RHP Kyle McCulloch to Reds for cash considerations
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Gregory Infante, C Tyler Flowers, OF Alejandro De Aza

Recent White Sox first-rounders like Chris Sale, Gordon Beckham and Jared Mitchell may be turning the tide, but Chicago's run of top picks last decade contributed little to the big league team—at least not directly. The club flipped Joe Borchard (’00) for Matt Thornton, Royce Ring (’02) for post-post-peak Roberto Alomar, Brian Anderson (’03) for Mark Kotsay, Josh Fields (’04) for Mark Teahen, Lance Broadway (’05) for Ramon Castro and, finally, Aaron Poreda (’07) for Jake Peavy. That accounts for every White Sox first-rounder of the aughts except for the since-released Kris Honel (’01) and Kyle McCulloch (’06), whom they recently shipped to the Reds in a minor deal. The former Texas Longhorn, now 26, has spent most of his career in Double-A, going 20-23, 4.86 in 74 games for Birmingham with a high WHIP (1.54) and low strikeout rate (4.5 per nine innings).

Cincinnati Reds
RHP Tyler Cline, RHP Joel Ernst, RHP Daniel Guerrero, RHP Evan Hildenbrandt, RHP Junior Martinez, LHP Nathan Driessen, LHP Jose Marizan, C Will Harford, C Trey Manz, 1B Tommy Nurre, OF Sean Conner, OF Jeff Taylor
Acquired: RHP Kyle McCulloch from White Sox for cash considerations
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Carlos Fisher, RHP Jordan Smith, LHP Daniel Ray Herrera, 1B Yonder Alonso, SS Zack Cozart, SS Kris Negron, OF Todd Frazier

A fourth-round pick in ’08, Tyler Cline flashed heavy arm-side run and a power breaking ball when he signed with the Reds out of a Cartersville, Ga., high school. But he made just 25 appearances in three pro seasons—two in the Gulf Coast League and another in the Pioneer—logging just 97 2/3 innings, but with solid results (2.76 ERA, 74/38 strikeouts/walks).

Cleveland Indians
RHP Alexander Morales, RHP Andy Shive, RHP Matt Speake, LHP Nick Kirk, LHP Ryan Morris, 1B Ben Carlson
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Josh Judy
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Jensen Lewis

The Indians acquired Andy Shive in October as one of two players to be named received from the Yankees in the Kerry Wood trade. They still have third baseman Matt Cusick to show for Wood's time in Cleveland.

Cleveland made back-to-back North Carolina high school selections in the ’06 draft, taking lefthander Ryan Morris in the fourth round and righty Chris Archer in the fifth. The Indians included Archer in their ’08 trade with the Cubs for Mark DeRosa, and the power righthander blossomed in Double-A last year to become the centerpiece of Chicago's recent Matt Garza deal. Unfortunately, Morris fizzled out in A-ball as he dealt with myriad injuries. The 23-year-old showed promise in his one healthy full season by going 9-7, 3.76 with a 1.29 WHIP over 27 starts for low Class A Lake County in ’08.

Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Steven Cishek, RHP Alex Sanabia, LHP Dustin Richardson, LHP Sean West, OF Bryan Petersen
Optioned to Double-A: RHP Sandy Rosario

John Raynor requested and received his release from the Marlins. The Pirates targeted him with the second pick in the ’09 Rule 5 draft, but they returned him on May 4 after he began 2-for-10 with Pittsburgh. The speedy 27-year-old left fielder batted .284/.349/.373 in 134 at-bats for Triple-A New Orleans last season.

Big league reliever Sergio Romo's younger brother, Andrew pitched well enough for short-season Salem-Keizer last season (23 whiffs in 24 2/3 innings), but the23-year-old's overall numbers are not as encouraging.
