Minor League Transactions: Jan. 9-15

Official minor league transactions, conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball, for the period Jan. 9-15.

Three players who signed minor league deals in this installment—Zach Duke, Jeff Francis and Delmon Young—are Article XX(B) major league free agents. As such, they receive two automatic contract clauses, which you can read about in the intro to our major league free agent listing.

Though 39-year-old reliever Luis Vizcaino hasn’t appeared in the majors since making 11 appearances for the 2009 Indians, he has remained active in the Dominican League (pitching for Cibao in 2010 and 2012) and in the Mexican League, where he ranked third with 25 saves in 2013.

The Liu Rodriguez signed by the Brewers is the same one whom the White Sox signed out of Venezuela in 1995 and whom reached the majors for 39 games as a utility infielder in 1999. Since qualifying for minor league free agency after the 2001 season, Rodriguez has played in professional leagues the world over, including the Mexican League (2002, 2004-05), the independent Atlantic and Golden leagues and the Italian Baseball League, where he played last year (and also in 2003).

Now 37 years old, Rodriguez has spent the bulk of his time since 2006 playing in the Atlantic League, mostly with York, batting .292/.356/.382 in more than 1,800 trips to the plate in indy ball.

Brewerfan.net indicates that Rodriguez will serve in a coaching capacity for the Rookie-level Arizona League club.

Despite not being under contract with a club last August, Jordan Norberto nevertheless received a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball for his association with the Biogenesis clinic. The 27-year-old lefty reliever must serve the entirety of that suspension before he can suit up for a Rays affiliate.
