Minor League Transactions: Jan. 25-31

Arizona Diamondbacks
RHP Micah Owings, C Mark Reed, OF Jon Mark Owings (Sioux Falls (American Association))
Removed from 40-man roster: RHP Daniel Stange, RHP Brian Sweeney

The Diamondbacks will have many first-base types competing for playing time in spring training—Juan Miranda, Brandon Allen, Xavier Nady . . . and Micah Owings, who could make the team in a long relief role, while also pinch-hitting and taking the field on occasion. For good measure, Arizona also signed younger brother Jon Mark, 25, who played in the Braves system from 2004 through ’09 and last year batted .235/.304/.415 in 183 at-bats for Sioux City.

Fun fact: Micah Owings has batted .293/.323/.538 with nine home runs in his four big league seasons, totaling 198 plate appearances. Those nine homers equal or exceed 105 position players in that time period, considering only those with as many as 198 PAs.

Baltimore Orioles

Boston Red Sox
C Paul Hoover

Paul Hoover has caught 694 games in his minor league career, and the soon-to-be 35-year-old isn't done yet. The reliable catch-and-throw man (.699 OPS at Triple-A) will attempt to make it six cups of coffee in six years as he joins the Red Sox organization in ’11. He'll be a prime callup candidate for September, when fatigued catchers need reinforcements. Hoover has played in a total of 32 games in five years, breaking down as four, three, 13, three and nine for the Marlins and Phillies.
