Minor League Transactions: Jan. 16-22

Official minor league transactions, conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball, for the period Jan. 16-22.

• Three players who signed minor league deals in this installment—John McDonald, Lyle Overbay and Mark Reynolds—are Article XX(B) major league free agents who won’t have to spend all season in Triple-A if they don’t want to. For more, read the intro to our major league free agent listing.

• Don’t forget about the Minor League Free Agent Tracker, which has 2014 organizations for 330-odd players.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Signed: 1B Shelley Duncan

A Tucson native who played college ball at Arizona, Shelley Duncan is the son of new D-backs special assistant Dave Duncan. Shelley has logged 330 games in the big leagues, appearing with the Yankees, Indians or Rays in each of the past seven seasons and batting .226/.305/.419 (99 OPS+). He can provide righthanded power at first base, left field or DH.

Released: RHP Simon Binns

The Dodgers originally signed Trayvon Robinson out of Crenshaw High in Los Angeles, selecting him in the 10th round of the 2005 draft. He burst onto the prospect scene at high Class A Inland Empire in 2009, hitting .306/.375/.500 with 15 homers and 43 steals. The Dodgers traded Robinson at the 2011 trade deadline in the three-team transaction that landed catcher Tim Federowicz and righty Stephen Fife in L.A.

Miami Marlins
OF Angel Morales
Released: RHP Junior Rincon, LHP Patrick Merkling, OF Connor Burke, OF Ryan McIntyre

Milwaukee Brewers
1B Lyle Overbay (Article XX-B free agent), 1B Mark Reynolds (Article XX-B free agent)

Even if prospect Hunter Morris, the MVP of the Double-A Southern League in 2012, is not ready to take over at first base, the Brewers have insured they will not feature an encore performance from the first basemen—mostly Juan Francisco and Yuniseky Betancourt—who combined to hit .206/.259/.370 last season. Major league free agents Lyle Overbay and Mark Reynolds will see to that, with Overbay doubling as a fine option to pinch-hit.

RHP Giancarlo Alvarado (re-signed), LHP John Lannan, SS Omar Quintanilla (non-tendered by Mets)

Oakland Athletics
C Dusty Brown (did not play in 2013)

Pittsburgh Pirates

Seattle Mariners
C Manny Pina

Tampa Bay Rays
RHP Jesse Hahn and LHP Alex Torres to Padres for RHP Matt Andriese, RHP Brad Boxberger, RHP Matt Lollis, 2B Logan Forsythe and 2B Maxx Tissenbaum

The last time the Rays made an “inventory” trade with the Padres, they came away with relievers Brandon Gomes and Cesar Ramos, who both have logged big league time, plus versatile infielder Cole Figueroa, who posted a .361 on-base percentage at Triple-A Durham in 2013. Tampa Bay acquired those players in the December 2010 trade that sent shortstop Jason Bartlett to San Diego.

Texas Rangers
LHP Rafael Perez
Released: RHP Tyler Tufts

Toronto Blue Jays
RHP Jose Diaz, RHP Luis Miguel Gomez, RHP Jeffry Martinez, RHP Luis Miguel Sanchez, RHP Thony Vinicio, LHP Erick Hurtado (released by Yankees, June 17), SS Junior Vasquez, OF Francisco Javier Rodriguez

All eight players signed by the Blue Jays this time were assigned to Rookie-level affiliates in the system, either in the Gulf Coast League or at Bluefield. From what we can tell, only lefty Erick Hurtado has previous experience in affiliated ball.

Washington Nationals
RHP Clay Hensley (Sugar Land (Atlantic)), LHP Zach Jackson
