Toronto Blue Jays
RHP Radhames Liz (LG Twins (Korea)), RHP Frank Viola III

The Blue Jays signed a pair of righthanders with interesting back stories in affiliated ball. On the strength of a plus fastball, Radhames Liz peaked as the No. 2 prospect in the Orioles system in 2008, but he raised all sorts of red flags in his big league time with Baltimore, spanning trial runs in 2007-09, including a 7.50 ERA over 110 innings, a 1.89 WHIP and a 1.1 SO/BB ratio. Still just 30, he found success in Korea, where he’s spent the past three seasons, and now returns to the States. Last season for the LG Twins he led the KBO with 188 strikeouts while finishing fourth in the ERA race at 3.06, according to MyKBO.net.

Frank Viola III washed out in the White Sox system in 2008 after suffering a knee injury, and while he latched on in the independent American Association in 2010, he failed to capture the attention of a major league organization in subsequent years. That is until this spring. Learning a knuckleball made all the difference for Viola, who trained with R.A. Dickey, and after three-plus years of fine-tuning the pitch he’s ready to unleash it in the affiliated minors.
