Minor League Transactions: Dec. 13-20

Minor League TransactionsOfficial minor league transactions, conveyed to Baseball America by Major League Baseball, for the period Dec. 13-20.

This is the final transactions installment for 2013 until the feature returns in 2014. Until then, spend time getting acquainted with the Minor League Free Agent Tracker.

The wave of free agent signings this time is at least partially attributable to the fact that the Rule 5 draft has come and gone. Now players can sign anywhere they like without worrying about being uprooted via the Rule 5. It happens from time to time, such as in the 2012 draft when the White Sox selected shortstop Angel Sanchez from the Angels, who had signed him as a minor league free agent in October.

New York signed Jimmy Falla as a nondrafted free agent out of South Florida and signed Aaron Gates out of the independent United League after he finished his career at Pepperdine.

Bigger picture: In the span of two days in mid-December the Yankees have released 33 players who appeared on reserve lists for the organization’s domestic minor league clubs. That’s enough players to fill a roster, and then some.
