Atlanta Braves
RHP Juan Jaime, 3B Wes Helms
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Randall Delgado
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Erik Cordier, 2B Phil Gosselin, OF Willie Cabrera

A hard thrower who had Tommy John surgery in April ’10 and has not yet returned to action, Juan Jaime could morph into a useful bullpen piece for Atlanta, assuming they can re-sign him to a minor league deal for next season. (The 24-year-old Jaime has just 32 innings of experience in full-season ball, however.) The Braves know a thing or two about acquiring relievers on the cheap. They snagged Eric O'Flaherty on waivers from the Mariners in November ’08, Cristhian Martinez from the Marlins in April ’10 and Anthony Varvaro from the Mariners (again) last January. Atlanta also signed Juan Abreu (whom they packaged to Houston in the Michael Bourn deal) and Jairo Asencio (who won Best Reliever honors in the International League) on the minor league free agent market.

Reinstated from DL: RHP Anatanaer Batista, RHP Michael Olmsted, RHP Mathew Price, LHP Royce Ring, 2B Zach Gentile, OF Andrew Turocy

Prior to his callup, Ryan Lavarnway mashed an eye-opening 30 homers while batting .293/.372/.559 in 417 at-bats at Double-A and Triple-A. The Orioles' Matt Wieters hit 27 homers at those same levels and in those same leagues (Eastern, International) in ’08. [Correction: Wieters actually played in the Carolina and Eastern leagues. ME] That's not to compare Lavarnway and Wieters as prospects—though it does illustrate how difficult it is for a catcher to go deep 30 times in a minor league season. The only 30-homer catchers turned up in a cursory search of the past seven seasons: the Blue Jays' J.P. Arencibia, who hit 32 bombs for Las Vegas last year, and the Angels' Mike Napoli, who struck 31 homers for Double-A Arkansas in ’05. The former benefited from a crazy hitting environments of the Pacific Coast League, while the latter played exclusively in Double-A.

Can anyone find a 30-homer catcher who spent about half the season in the International League?

The Rockies wasted no time in releasing Mike Jacobs after Major League Baseball announced that the 30-year-old Triple-A slugger had become the first player to test positive for human growth hormone.

While Ubaldo Jimenez ran up a 5.79 ERA in his first five starts for the Indians, Drew Pomeranz, the lead prospect acquired by Colorado, had an emergency appendectomy on Aug. 20. Pomeranz pitched seven strong innings (two hits, four whiffs, no walks) in his Rockies debut for Double-A Tulsa.

Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Tyler Chatwood, LHP Horacio Ramirez
Placed on 7-day DL: 3B Dillon Baird, OF Reggie Willits
Reinstated from DL: RHP Eric Junge

The 39th overall pick in the ’99 draft and former No. 1 prospect in the Giants system, Jerome Williams had not started a major league game since ’07. In the four years between starts, he kicked around Triple-A with the Twins, Dodgers, Athletics and Angels; played independent ball in the Golden and Atlantic leagues; and even spent the ’10 season in the Taiwanese major league. He latched on with the Angels in June and earned his callup by going 7-2, 3.91 with a 60/15 strikeouts/walks in 73 2/3 innings for Salt Lake.

Signed by the Expos as a draft-and-follow in ’01, Jason Stevenson advanced to Triple-A with the organization before retiring (and subsequently drawing his release) in ’06. He headed home to Redding, Calif., to deal with what he deemed family issues, as J.J. Cooper detailed in a highly recommended Independent Audit. The 30-year-old Stevenson did not pitch professionally in the five seasons from ’06 through ’10, though he emerged as the North American League's top pitcher this season, going 8-0, 1.68 in nine games with a 76-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio for Chico.

Seattle Mariners
RHP Dylan deMeyer (NDFA—Rancho Buena Vista HS, Vista, Calif.), RHP Andrew Kittredge (NDFA—Washington), LHP Philippe Valiquette
Released: 3B Matt Mangini

Reinstated from DL: C Steve Baron, SS Nick Franklin

Vista, Calif., prep righty Dylan deMeyer passed on a commitment to Galveston (Texas) JC to turn pro with the Mariners. "I've always wanted to play pro ball. That was my goal," deMeyer is quoted as saying on the Rancho Buena Vista High web site.

The Mariners lost Aaron Laffey on a waiver claim to the Yankees, a team searching far and wide for lefty relievers.

Recalled: RHP Joel Carreno, C Brian Jeroloman, OF Darin Mastroianni
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Brad Mills
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Robert Ray
Reinstated from DL: RHP Scott Richmond, RHP Robert Webb, LHP Sean Henn, 1B Balbino Fuenmayor, 1B Ryan Shealy

The Blue Jays signed Ontario native Luke Willson following a tryout at the Rogers Centre, though he played only football (tight end) at Rice, where he has two years of eligibility remaining. A 6-foot-6 lefty batter, Willson has raw power, if not an abundance of baseball experience. He played for the Canadian national junior team in ’08 and worked out with the Owls baseball team in ’09 before focusing on football.

Lefty Francisco Gracesqui became the first player from Sullivan County (N.Y.) CC to play pro ball. He signed for $40,000. Gracesqui attended New York's Washington High, just like his older brother Frank, a 32-year-old lefty who pitches in the Atlantic League (and appeared in seven games for the ’04 Marlins).

Washington Nationals
OF Rashad Hatcher
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Trevor Holder, C Miguel Perez, 2B Khayyan Norfork, OF Bryce Harper
Reinstated from DL: LHP Sammy Solis, C Devin Ivany, OF Justin Bloxom

Bryce Harper strained his right hamstring in an Aug. 18 game for Double-A Harrisburg. The 18-year-old batted .256 (33-for-129) with three homers and seven doubles (.395 slugging) in 37 games for the Senators. At a the more age-appropriate level of low Class A, Harper batted .318/.423/.554 with 14 homers, 17 doubles and 44 walks in 72 games.
