A number of one-time members of the Padres front office now work for Diamondbacks, including, of course, general manager Kevin Towers, but extending also to special assistant Bill Bryk and pro scout Bill Gayton. With all the Padres expats in the desert, left fielder Everett Williams, a San Diego second-rounder in 2009, made a soft landing with the Arizona organization after being released last week. In fact, Gayton served as Padres scouting director from 2001-09.

The season-ending shoulder injury to big league right fielder Avisail Garcia created a ripple effect in the White Sox organization. Reinstated from DL: 2B Justin Toole

An Orioles eighth-rounder from Michigan State in 2012, Torsten Boss has no standout tool, but his lefthanded bat and defensive versatility could carry him up the ladder. He didn’t have the type of full-season debut last year to win acclaim, batting .238/.333/.358 with seven homers and six steals in 106 games at low Class A Delmarva, and he’ll need to make more contact after striking out 23 percent of the time. The 23-year-old Boss plays second base, third base and, beginning this year, right field, so that versatility combined with more hard contact could win him favor with his new organization

The 23-year-old Duke von Schamann throws strikes—he has yet to walk a batter in 10 innings this year—but he doesn’t have the type of arsenal to separate himself from the more than 1,400 pitchers active in the minors right now. However, a pitcher like this sometimes needs only the right opportunity to get a foot in the door. Von Schamann sinks his fastball at 89-91 mph and throws a fine changeup and OK curveball. The Dodgers’ 15th-rounder from Texas Tech in 2012 advanced to Double-A Chattanooga the following year, going 11-7, 4.67 in 27 games (23 starts) across two levels, logging 6.9 strikeouts and 2.6 walks per nine innings.

New York Mets
Signed: RHP Martires Arias (released by Nationals, March 20)

Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Vic Black

Back to square one for Martires Arias, who re-signed with the Mets after being released by Nationals two weeks ago. He originally signed with New York out of the Dominican Republic back in 2008, spending five years with the organization—he advanced only to Rookie-level Kingsport—before being selected by Washington in the minor league Rule 5 draft last December.

Vic Black spent the first week of the season on the disabled list at Triple-A Las Vegas while dealing with pinched nerve on the right side of his neck. He pitched one inning prior to the injury.

New York Yankees
SS Eduardo Nunez (DFA) to Twins for LHP Miguel Sulbaran
Recalled: RHP Shane Greene, LHP Cesar Cabral, C Austin Romine
Optioned to Triple-A: C Austin Romine
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Yeicok Calderon

Eduardo Nunez lost his utility infield job with the Yankees this spring to Dean Anna and Yangervis Solarte, two players with zero big league experience entering 2014, so New York designated for assignment and traded Nunez to the Twins. (Nunez, however, landed at Triple-A Rochester because the Twins already have their own erratic utilityman, Eduardo Escobar.) The pitcher whom the Yankees received for Nunez, lefty Miguel Sulbaran, has intriguing arm speed and feel to spin a breaking ball, and at age 20 has plenty of time to develop. He went 9-4, 2.96 in 27 games (20 starts) in the low Class A Midwest League last year, striking out 8.1 and walking 2.6 batters per nine innings. As an added bonus, Sulbaran made 11 scoreless relief appearances in the Venezuelan League last winter, holding lefty batters hitless in 12 at-bats.
