Minor League Transactions

This week’s installment considers all transactions reported by MLB between Aug. 2 and Aug. 8. The previous installment is available here.

The numbers in parentheses below refer to draft rounds. Nondrafted free agents (with schools) also are included. Check out the 2008 Draft Database for draft picks in chronological order. Check out last week’s Prospects On The Move for a look at young players who have earned promotions or, in some cases, demotions.

Arizona Diamondbacks
Draft pick signed:
RHP Kevin Eichhorn (3)
Released: OF Ariel Urena
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Jailen Peguero
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Leyson Septimo

Eichhorn, son of ex-big leaguer Mark Eichhorn, signed for $500,000.

Atlanta Braves
Draft pick signed:
RHP Jacob Thompson (5)
Released: OF Yohan Silva
Recalled: LHP Chuck James
Added to 40-man roster: RHP Vladimir Nunez, LHP Francisley Bueno
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Royce Ring, C Corky Miller
Placed on 7-day DL: SS Javier Guzman
Reinstated from DL: LHP Chad Rodgers, C Chris Anderson, C Ben Johnson, 3B Wes Timmons, OF Yohan Silva

Thompson started the year as a consensus first-round pick after going 21-4 his first two seasons at Virginia and posting a 1.50 ERA in 2007. He struggled with velocity and fastball command in 2008, however, going 6-4, 4.30 for the Cavaliers with a .274 average against. He signed for $190,000.

Baltimore Orioles
LHP Brian Burres
Draft pick signed: RHP Bobby Bundy (8)
Released: OF Bobby Andrews
Recalled: RHP Rocky Cherry
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Chris Waters, OF Luis Montanez
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Brian Burres, SS Brandon Fahey
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP J.P. Martinez, OF Lance West
Reinstated from DL: OF Bobby Andrews

Montanez, the third overall pick by the Cubs in 2000, destroyed the Double-A Eastern League before his callup. Not only did the 26-year-old outfielder lead the league in all three triple-crown categories (.335, 26, 97), but he also left the EL as the leader with 151 hits, a .601 slugging percentage, 63 extra-base hits and 90 runs scored. After spending parts of 2006 and 2007 in Triple-A, Montanez re-signed with Baltimore even though it meant an assignment to Double-A Bowie, the only affiliate where he would be guaranteed an everyday job. His dream season continued when he went 5-for-his-first-10 with the Orioles, with a home run and two RBIs.

Bundy’s $600,000 bonus established a new high for an eighth-round pick.

Boston Red Sox
SS Josh Wilson from Pirates for player to be named
Recalled: RHP Chris Smith
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Chris Smith
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Dave Gassner, 2B Tony Granadillo
Reinstated from DL: RHP Michael Lee, C Juan Apodaca, SS Ryan Khoury

Chicago Cubs
LHP Scott Eyre to Phillies for RHP Brian Schlitter
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Justin Bristow, LHP Rich Hill

Chicago White Sox
RHP Adam Russell
Optioned to Triple-A: LHP Clayton Richard
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Nick Mahin
Reinstated from DL: RHP Nathan Jones

Richard, 24, showed the same fine command in the big leagues (11 strikeouts, four walks in 13 innings) that he did in the minors, but the results did not follow. He went 0-2, 10.38 in three starts for the White Sox, perhaps because he was around the strike zone too much, as evidenced by 25 hits allowed and three home runs. Chicago’s eighth-round pick out of Michigan in 2005, Richard is a strike-thrower and a fast worker to the extreme, so he’ll be afforded other opportunities. He returns to Triple-A Charlotte, where he went 6-0, 2.45 with 33-4 K-BB in 44 innings before his callup. Had he not been called up in the first place, Richard would be in Beijing right now preparing to start for Team USA in the Olympics.

Cincinnati Reds
RHP Justin Lehr (Doosan (Korea)), RHP Joe Valentine
Traded: 3B Aaron Herr to Phillies for future considerations
Acquired: 3B Aaron Herr from Phillies for future considerations

Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Henry Arias, RHP Jeff Jeffords, RHP Marcus McBeth, RHP Luis Montano, LHP Jeremy Horst, SS Kevyn Feiner, OF Denis Phipps

The son of long-time Cardinals second baseman Tom Herr, Aaron Herr has struggled to find consistency, on both offense and defense, since being selected 40th overall as a shortstop by the Braves in the 2000 draft. Now 27 and primarily a third baseman, Herr has taken a long and winding road to Triple-A Louisville, passing through the Mariners, Cardinals, Reds and Indians organizations before coming back to the Reds in a June trade. Herr briefly spent time with the Phillies last week, though he never suited up for one of their affiliates, before being traded back to the Reds a day later. Upon his return, Herr was placed on the disabled list. Most of his career has been spent at the Double-A level (290 games), and he’s hit just .255/.309/.434 in 877 at-bats since becoming a Triple-A regular at the end of 2006.

Lotzkar, the Reds’ supplemental first-round pick in 2007, went on the DL with a hairline fracture in his right elbow. The suspensions listed above stem from Dayton’s July 24 brawl with Peoria. For their actions, Dragons Arias, Jeffords, Montano, Horst, Mesoraco, Feiner, Phipps and Reed all received three-game suspensions.

McDonald, 23, earned his promotion to Triple-A by going 5-3, 3.19 with 113 strikeouts, 46 walks and 12 home runs allowed in 119 innings for Double-A Jacksonville.

Milwaukee Brewers
Draft pick signed:
C Brett Lawrie (1)
Released: RHP Jorge Crespo, SS Jimmy Mojica
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Luis Pena, OF Stephen Chapman
Reinstated from DL: RHP Donovan Hand, RHP Cody Scarpetta, LHP Zach Braddock, LHP Derek Miller, C Angel Salome, 2B Callix Crabbe, OF Michael Brantley
Placed on temporarily inactive list: RHP Wes Etheridge

The 16th overall pick from Brookswood Secondary School in Langley, B.C., Lawrie came to terms for $1.7 million just days before he left to take part in the Olympics for Team Canada. He was MVP of the World Junior Championships tournament in Edmonton the week prior to that. Lawrie’s flight itinerary while he negotiated his first pro contract: Western Canada (Edmonton) to the Southeastern U.S. (Durham, N.C., to take part in exhibitions against Team USA) to the Far East (Beijing). Lawrie’s sister Danielle also will take part in the Beijing Games, as she’s an all-Pacific-10 Conference pitcher at Washington and a star for the Canadian softball team.

Minnesota Twins
LHP Francisco Liriano
Added to 40-man roster: 1B Randy Ruiz
Placed on 7-day DL: OF Erik Lis
Reinstated from DL: SS Paul Kelly
Option transferred: LHP Jose Mijares (high Class A Fort Myers to Double-A New Britain)

Liriano promptly won his first two starts back with the Twins after dominating the International League for 19 starts. The 24-year-old Liriano went 10-2, 3.28 for Rochester, with 113 strikeouts and 31 walks in 118 innings. He gave up just five runs and five walks in 34 July innings.

Reinstated from inactive list: RHP Emary Frederick

Murphy, a lefthanded batter, was the most advanced hitter of Double-A Binghamton’s big four, which consisted of Nick Evans, Fernando Martinez and Mike Carp, and he’s struggled very little in adjusting to big league pitching. He’s batting .478/.571/.783 with two doubles, a triple and a homer through 23 at-bats. A 13th-round pick out of Jacksonville in 2006, the 23-year-old Murphy batted .308/.374/.496 in 357 at-bats for Binghamton. The common line for Eastern League manager on Murphy was "he’s a grinder who can hit."

The Mariners decided to begin Morrow’s conversion from reliever to starter this season by sending him to Triple-A Tacoma. The fifth overall pick in 2006, he’ll be on a strict pitch count that will begin at 35 and increase with every start. The 24-year-old Morrow, whose fastball sits at 95-96 mph when he comes out of the bullpen, went 1-2, 1.47 with 10 saves for Seattle, while striking out 47, walking 15 and giving up five home runs in 37 innings.

Kinkade, 35, had hoped to be named for a second tour of duty on the U.S. Olympic team after helping Team USA win gold as a member of the 2000 team. He hit just .214 and was injured much of this season and was released after not making the Olympic team.
