Released: RHP Brad Clipp, RHP Donald Walters, 3B Brandon Taylor, OF Andy Lopez

The Cubs acquired Lopez from the Devil Rays in the February trade that sent righthander J.K. Ryu to Tampa Bay. The 20-year-old Lopez made it to high Class A for nine games in 2007, but has spent much of his time in rookie ball and low Class A since being the Rays’ eighth-round pick from high school in 2005.

Detroit Tigers
Return of Rule 5 selection: LHP Ed Campusano
Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: C Dusty Ryan, SS Cale Iorg, SS Danny Worth, OF Jeramy Laster

Campusano spent the season on the disabled list while recovering from Tommy John surgery, affording the Tigers six months to decide whether they wanted to keep the major league Rule 5 pick or cut him. They chose to return him to the Cubs, even though they would not be required to keep him on the major league 25-man roster in 2008.

Florida Marlins
Outrighted off 40-man roster: C Paul Hoover, 1B Jason Wood, OF Todd Linden
Granted free agency: C Paul Hoover, OF Todd Linden

Assigned to Hawaii Winter Baseball: RHP Jacob Marceaux, RHP Brett Sinkbeil

Hoover has spent most of his pro career in the minors (940 games going back to 1997, in fact), but one of his major league accomplishments might endure. On Sept. 29, the next to last day of the season, Hoover spoiled Mets righthander John Maine’s bid for a no-hitter with two outs in the eighth. The no-no would have been the first in the franchise’s 45-year history. Maine jammed Hoover, but the catcher fought it off and dribbled the ball down the third base line for infield hit.

Houston Astros
Outrighted off 40-man roster: LHP Stephen Randolph, SS Cody Ransom
Granted free agency: RHP Miguel Asencio

Kansas City Royals
Released: 2B Carlos Febles

The Royals committed to a pair of rookie Carloses in 1999, second baseman Febles and center fielder Beltran. Beltran, of course, won rookie of the year honors for his .293/.337/.454 season, but the 23-year-old Febles was not far behind. He hit .256/.336/.411. The trouble was his hitting never improved and his contributions to team speed and defense were just modest, and he was done as a regular in 2000, his sophomore season. Febles stuck around for a few years after that, last playing in the majors in 2003 and in the minors a year after that, hitting .257/.310/.356 for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in 68 games. The Royals had signed Febles as a minor league free agent in spring training 2005, but he never played another game for the organization.

Assigned to Arizona Fall League: RHP Garrett Mock, RHP Alexis Morales, RHP Zech Zinicola, C Devin Ivany, 3B Kory Casto, OF Justin Maxwell

Bacsik, of course, is the Al Downing of his generation for having yielded Barry Bonds’ record-setting 756th career home run. His career mark of 10-13, 5.46, however, pales in comparison to Downing’s 123-107, 3.22 numbers..
