padres-900x635HE’S WHERE? Righthander Matt Stites’ strikeout-to-walk ratio as closer for low Class A Fort Wayne last season looks like a typo: 60-to-3. Following an equally impressive run through the Arizona Fall League—which included 15-3 K-BB—the 22-year-old jumped straight to Double-A San Antonio. Center fielder Travis Jankowski, last year’s supplemental pick, skipped over Fort Wayne and will begin with high Class A Lake Elsinore.

WHO’S MISSING: Third baseman Fernando Perez injured his thumb while diving for a ball during spring training, and he could be out until summer. The 2012 third-rounder impressed the Padres with his pure lefty hitting stroke last season during his debut in the Arizona League. Righthanders Joe Wieland and Casey Kelly are recovering from Tommy John surgery, as is outfielder Rymer Liriano.

GO SEE: Fort Wayne’s rotation will feature two first-rounders up top with lefty Max Fried (seventh overall, 2012) and righty Joe Ross (25th, 2011). Supporting them will be last year’s supplemental-round righties Zach Eflin and Walker Weickel as well as 6-foot-7 Colombian righty Tayron Guerrero.
