Low A Dish: RiverDogs’ Catching Duo Leads The Way

South Atlantic League

Prospect Of The Day

We’ll give co-POTD awards to Charleston’s (Yankees) two teenage catchers, Austin Romine and Jesus Montero. Both put their offensive talents on display last night to lead the RiverDogs to a 10-8 win over Columbus (Rays). Romine, who caught last night while Montero served as the DH, hit two home runs and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on the night. Meanwhile, Montero went 2-for-5 with a home run of his own, a double and four RBIs.

Prospect Nuggets

Greensboro (Marlins) third baseman Matt Dominguez hit his 14th home run of the year (and sixth of August) as the Grasshoppers took down Greenville (Red Sox) 6-1. He went 1-for-3 overall … Kannapolis (White Sox) shortstop Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

What To Watch For Today

Augusta (Giants) lefthander Madison Bumgarner (13-3, 1.52) will try to extend his 28 inning shutout streak when the GreenJackets take on Kannapolis tonight. In case anyone is wondering, the SAL record for consecutive scoreless innings is 39 2/3 innings, so Bumgarner is roughly two starts away … Charleston and Columbus will play a doubleheader.

Midwest League

There was only one game in the MWL last night, which saw Fort Wayne (Padres) take down Lansing (Blue Jays) 8-1. Fort Wayne lefthander Corey Luebke allowed just one run on four hits over six innings to improve to 3-2, 3.19 in 42 1/3 innings on the year. Fort Wayne right fielder Sawyer Carroll went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. This was Carroll’s first multi-hit game with the Wizards after being called up from short-season Eugene last week. He was a 2008 supplemental third-round pick from Kentucky.

What To Watch For Today

Burlington (Royals) has won six in a row to open up a 4 1/2 game lead on second-place Cedar Rapids in the MWL West. The Bees will try to keep it rolling tonight as they host Beloit (Twins).
