Childers Suspended For 50 Games

Phillies righthander Matt Childers was suspended for 50 games Friday for failing a drug test. The 28-year-old had gone 4-1, 3.41 for Triple-A Ottawa, with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks in 37 innings.

A ninth-round pick of the Brewers in 1997, Childers pitched nine innings for the big league club in 2002. The Braves signed him for the 2005 season, and Childers pitched in four more big league innings that May. He landed in the Yankees’ organization in 2006, before latching on with the Phillies.

Childers’ brother Jason also was signed by the Brewers in 1997, though as a nondrafted free agent, and made his big league debut with the Devil Rays in 2006.
