Blue Jays, Mets, Twins Prospects Lead The Way In FSL

Along with the South Atlantic League, the Florida State League released its all-star teams Tuesday, and the lists didn’t disappoint.

The Southern Division is headlined by Brandon Nimmo and Dilson Herrera, teammates on the St. Lucie squad. Nimmo, a first-round pick from 2011, is hitting .325/.449/.460 through 54 games and is leading the league in walks. Herrera, acquired from the Pirates in the Marlon Byrd deal last season, is hitting behind Nimmo and is also enjoying a very fine season in high Class A. He’s second in the league in hits, and is slashing .307/.352/.411 with 12 doubles and 13 stolen bases in 16 tries.

Pirates outfield prospect Josh Bell, who signed for $5 million with the first pick of the second round in 2011, is at .308/.354/.466 with 12 doubles, three triples and five homers and will also be part of the Southern squad.

On the mound, the South will be led by Fort Myers righty J.O. Berrios, who is tearing up the league. He’s struck out 65 hitters (including 30 over his last three turns) in 56 1/3 innings and has let up just 49 hits in that time.

The Northern Division is paced by a pair of Yankees infielders, as well as two hot prospects from Toronto. Third basemen Eric Jagielo (who is currently on the disabled list with an injury to his midsection) and Dante Bichette Jr. each have found success in their first turns in high Class A. Jagielo, the Yankees’ first selection last June, is second to Fort Myers’ Adam Brett Walker (who also was named to the game) in home runs and is hitting .256/.339/.500 overall.

Bichette, who struggled mightily in two turns in the South Atlantic League, refined his approach and has thrived with Tampa. He’s hitting .281/.371/.459 with seven homers and 35 RBIs, and is filling in at third base while Jagielo is on the shelf.

The Northern pitchers are led by Dunedin lefty Dan Norris, who has struck out 66 against just 14 walks in 56 1/3 frames this season. He’s also sporting a sparkling 1.12 ERA and a WHIP of 1.05.

The game will be played on June 14 at McKechnie Field, home of the Bradenton Marauders.
