Aumont Highlights Team Canada Roster

Canada announced its 24-man roster for the 2010 Pan Am Qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and will send a club of national-team veterans to the island for the Oct. 1-10 tournament.

Phillies prospect Phillippe Aumont is the top prospect on the club that also includes Blue Jays righthanded reliever Trystan Magnuson, who pitched in this year's Futures Game, and Brewers infielder Taylor Green, who hit 13 home runs at Double-A Huntsville this season. The Jays contribute two other veterans of Canadian national teams who also were Magnuson's teammates at Double-A New Hampshire this year in pitcher-turned-outfielder Adam Loewen and third baseman Shawn Bowman. Lefthander Scott Diamond (Braves), who finished the season in Triple-A, and righthanded reliever Tom Boleska (Pirates) are among the team's other prospects.

Other notable names include former big leaguers such as Scott Thorman (Royals), Adam Stern (Brewers), Peter Orr (Nationals) and righthanders Steve Green, 32, and Mike Johnson, 34, a former Expos pitcher who hasn't pitched in independent ball since 2007. Johnson's the oldest player on the roster, while the 21-year-old Aumont is the youngest. Conspicuous in his absence is two-time Futures Gamer Brett Lawrie, a veteran of Canadian national teams who played on the World Baseball Classic club in 2009 as a teenager. He's headed to the Arizona Fall League.

Team Canada and Puerto Rico's national team will join the prospect-laden American team at USA Baseball's National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., for scrimmages at the end of September before heading to Puerto Rico for the tournament. The event will serve as a qualifier both for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, as well as for the International Baseball Federation's next Baseball World Cup.
