WBC Sets First Qualifier

Twelve nations have qualified for the 2013 World Baseball Classic, from the United States and Cuba to two-time defending champion Japan.

The countries that have yet to qualify will do so in four four-team qualifying events this fall, expected to be played around the globe. The first qualifier was announced Monday, with Canada, the Czech Republic and Great Britain joining host Germany in the event.

Scheduled for Sept. 20-24, the qualifier will be played in Regensburg, Germany, which played host to a successful first round of the 2009 World Cup.
