Raul Mondesi, the former major league outfielder who served as mayor of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic from 2010-2016, was sentenced to eight years in prison on corruption charges, according to multiple reports in the Dominican Republic. Mondesi was also fined 60 million Dominican pesos, or the equivalent of around $1.26 million.
Mondesi played 13 seasons in Major League Baseball, winning the National League Rookie of the Year award with the Dodgers in 1994. Mondesi, who spent seven seasons with the Dodgers, hit .273/.331/.485 over his career that also included time with the Blue Jays, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Angels and Braves.
One of his sons, Raul A. Mondesi, is a 22-year-old shortstop with the Royals who signed with the organization for $2 million as a 16-year-old in 2011.
