High School Top 25: May 7

Despite a 22-game winning streak coming to an end, Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) holds onto the top spot in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Top 25. The Monarchs split their season series with rival Orange (Calif.) Lutheran High, but already claimed the Trinity League title and have just two games left before the playoffs. There was minimal shifting among the top 10 teams. St. Francis High (Mountain View, Calif.) fell from No. 8 to No. 14 after losing its final two games of the season.

Three teams joined the rankings this week as playoffs are underway in Georgia, Florida, Texas and Arizona. Desert Mountain High (Scottsdale, Ariz.) is the top team in the state right now and marching toward the Division I state championship. Parkview High (Lilburn, Ga.) lost its seventh game of the season in the first round of the playoffs, but did salvage the series to advance. The Panthers dropped out, but may be able to break back in if they run the table in the Georgia 6-A playoffs, though they may have to cross East Coweta High (Sharpsburg, Ga.) at some point. Four teams in the top 15 have the potential of meeting in their respective state championships. No. 4 American Heritage High (Plantation, Fla.) and No. 11 Jesuit High (Tampa) are 5-A schools and No. 10 Loganville (Ga.) High is hoping for a rematch against No. 6 Gainesville (Ga.) High in the 5-A state championship to redeem a series sweep from a few weeks ago.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are as of May 5 and do not include ties.
