High School Top 25: May 26

After seeing Menchville High (Newport News, Va.) drop its first game of the season, Bellaire (Texas) High retook the top spot in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25.

Bellaire (Texas) High held fast to the top spot after advancing to the regional semi-final round in the playoffs. In the quarter finals the Cardinals took down Houston’s Memorial High in a three-game series. Memorial had won the first game but Bellaire battled back to stave off elimination.

Scottsdale, Ariz.’s Notre Dame Prep lost in the finals of the 4A-II state tournament and dropped eight spots to No. 10. That allowed Moody High of Corpus Christi, Texas to slide into the second spot. La Cueva High of Albuquerque fell the farthest, 11 spots, to No. 18 after losing in the 6-A state finals. Last year’s national champion American Heritage High (Plantation, Fla.) dropped out of the rankings after being denied a second straight 3-A title. The Patriots fell to Jacksonville’s Bolles High.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of May 24 and do not include ties.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The swine flu scare delayed the Texas high school season so Baseball America is making a slight adjustment to its top 25 ranking schedule. The next poll will be released on June 9 as scheduled, but will only feature 25 teams. A final poll will expand to 50 teams and be released one week later on June 16.
