High School Top 25: May 24

After consistently appearing in the Top 25 in the last decade, Owasso (Okla.) High had a shot at winning its first national championship as the Rams went into the 6-A finals ranked No. 1. But they ran into Broken Arrow’s ace righthander Archie Bradley in a single-elimination game, dropping a 4-0 contest, thus falling from No. 1. Owasso lands at No. 12 in the latest Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25 while Broken Arrow makes a jump to No. 4.

Just about every state in the country is into the postseason, which has seen up major upsets in the last two weeks. After a poor showing in the National Classic, St. Francis High (Mountain View, Calif.) recovered to finish strong and claim the No. 1 seed for Central Coast Section playoffs. However, in a stunning result, St. Francis fell to Belmont, Calif.’s Carlmont High, the No. 16 seed, in the first round. St. Francis’ season ended abruptly and they dropped out of the Top 25.

Wayne County High of Jesup, Ga. suffered the hardest hit, falling from No. 5 out of the rankings after losing in the second round to Fayetteville’s Whitewater High in a two-game sweep. No. 12 Gulliver Prep (Miami) also dropped from the rankings after an early exit in the postseason. The Raiders failed to make the state tournament, falling to North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.) in the region finals.

Two teams, Phoenix’s Mountain Pointe High and West Boca Raton High (Boca Raton, Fla.) claimed state titles to finish in the Top 25 after being ranked in the preseason but eventually falling out after early-season skids. West Boca finished the season on a 19-game winning streak.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of May 22 and do not include ties.
