Another New No. 1 Atop High School Top 25

In what is typically a running theme, the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25, presented by Marucci Sports, has a new No. 1. This week it’s The Woodlands (Texas) High. The Highlanders are off to an 18-0 start behind super sophomore Chris Andritsos, a corner infielder and righthander, and pitchers Ryan Burnett and Carter Hope. For the second year in a row, a Texas school will travel to Cary, N.C., to defend its No. 1 ranking in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational. The Woodlands faces No. 21 Jenks (Okla.) High in the first round.

Cathedral Catholic High (San Diego) slipped to No. 3 after losing to Granite Hills High (El Cajon, Calif.). Of the top five teams, four will be at the 2013 NHSI: The Woodlands, No. 2 Venice (Fla.) High, Cathedral Catholic and No. 5 Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.)—the defending NHSI champions. Three other teams—No. 12 Harvard-Westlake High (Studio City, Calif.), No. 15 Tullahoma (Tenn.) High and Jenks.

O’Connor High (Phoenix) jumped into the rankings at No. 19 after going 16-0 to open the season and beating perennial power Bishop Gorman High (Las Vegas). Klein (Texas) High is no longer undefeated, but still moved up nine spots after a 17-1 start. Campolindo High of Moraga, Calif.) dropped the most—16 spots to No. 24. The Cougars got a much-needed win against Elk Grove (Calif.) High, but have been on notice and simply aren’t living up to expectations with a 4-4 start.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are as of March 24 and do not include ties.
