High School Top 25: March 15

The early goings of any high school season tend to see interesting results as teams get acclimated to their strengths and weaknesses and 2011 is no different. St. Francis High of Mountain View, Calif. took over the No. 1 spot in the first in-season Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25. The Lancers are off to an 8-0 start and about to begin play in the tough West Catholic League.

Despite four losses, Corpus Christi’s Carroll High fell just three spots to No. 4. Three of the Tigers’ losses came against very talented opponents—The Woodlands (Texas) High, Houston’s Langham Creek High and Flower Mound (Texas) High. Mountain Pointe High of Phoenix fared worst of the fallen, dropping 15 spots from No. 6 to 21 after surrendering 29 runs in its two losses.

Joining the rankings this week are JSerra Catholic High of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Spanish Fork (Utah) High, Charlotte’s Ardrey Kell High, Clovis West High of Fresno, Calif., Clements High of Fort Bend, Texas, and Phoenix’s Pinnacle High. JSerra made the biggest jump to No. 10 after starting the season 5-0 and winning arguably the toughest tournament so far in the Newport Elks Tournament.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of March 12 and do not include ties.
