High School Top 25: June 9

Bellaire (Texas) High’s bid for a national championship ended this past weekend when it was eliminated in the region finals of the Texas playoffs. Still alive after taking two out of three from Calallen High (Corpus Christi, Texas) is the new No. 1 team, Moody High (Corpus Christi, Texas). Moody is now into single-elimination format and will face Arlington Heights High (Fort Worth, Texas). The winner of that game will face the winner of Texarkana’s Texas High and Brenham (Texas) High).

Menchville High of Newport News, Va. took the 3-A Virginia State championship by beating Hanover High of Mechanicsville 7-1. Columbus (Ga.) High dropped to No. 19 after being taken down by now No. 15 Cartersville (Ga.) High in the 3-A state finals. Capistrano Valley High (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won the Southern Section Division I crown thanks to a solo home run by lefthander Tyler Matzek, who is sure to go in the first 10 picks of Tuesday’s draft.

The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of June 7 and do not include ties.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The swine flu scare delayed the Texas high school season so Baseball America is making a slight adjustment to its top 25 ranking schedule. The final poll will be released on June 16 and expand to 50 teams.
