2018 Preseason High School Top 50

The top 50 teams are selected through a poll of representatives from the Baseball Coaches Association (BCA) and Baseball America. The committee gives heavy weight to coaches and programs that have historically been successful, and you’ll find many of the top preseason teams to be perennial powers. As the season gets into full swing, Baseball America will publish the top 25 teams every two weeks.

Shawnee (Okla.) High finished the 2017 season with a perfect 40-0 record and a third consecutive Oklahoma 5A state championship. With the team returning 14 players and given the track record of the program, Shawnee opens the 2018 season ranked No. 1 in the Baseball America Preseason High School Top 50, powered by DeMarini.

Harvard-Westlake (Los Angeles) High, Basic (Henderson, Nev.) High, Orange (Calif.) Lutheran and Monsignor Pace (Miami Gardens) High round out the top five. Of the group, just Basic finished the 2017 season ranked (No. 14) though Orange Lutheran spent significant time near the top of the 2017 rankings near the beginning of the season after winning the 2017 National High School Invitational, before fading thanks in part to a tough Trinity League schedule.

Speaking of the Trinity League, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) High should be one of Orange Lutheran's toughest opponents this season as the decorated southern California program enters the season ranked No. 10. Both schools will be attending the 2018 NHSI where Eric Borba's Orange Lutheran team will look to become the first repeat champion since Mater Dei won the tournament in its first and second years (2012 & 2013).

One of the premier high school tournaments every year, this year’s NHSI field also includes No. 9 Curtis Christian (River Ridge, La.) High, No. 11 Walton (Marietta, Ga.) High and No. 44 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) High.

While preseason rankings in general can be extremely volatile, this is especially so in the high school ranks, where roster turnover can drastically change teams from one year to the next and given the talent disparity in different regions around the country. Many states are beginning their high school seasons this week and the following week, while various northern states won't begin play for a month longer or more. All of these factors will affect the movement of the rankings during ensuing weeks.

Starting on March 6, Baseball America will publish the top 25 teams every two weeks throughout the season before expanding to 50 teams once again for the final rankings at the end of May.
