MLB Draft Running Diary

In addition to detailed scouting reports on every one of the first-round picks, we’re also posting a running diary of the first round and some of the Tweets and thoughts that are being shared in real time.

The Baseball America Draft Room

The Baseball America Draft Room

6:50 p.m.: Less than 10 minutes until the draft starts, there still is plenty of uncertainty. Normally we know how the top five picks will likely shake out by this point. But much like last year, the Astros are playing it very close to the vest, which also makes it hard to figure out how the rest of the top five will line up.

6:52 p.m.:

6:55 p.m.: A large part of the Baseball America staff is gathered in the BA kitchen with MLB Network on the TV. On the walls around us are Baseball America covers of previous No. 1 draft picks Alex Rodriguez, Justin Upton and Delmon Young.

7:01 p.m:

7:06 p.m.:

7:08 p.m.: Finally we know who’s No. 1. Three minutes before it’s announced, which may be a new draft record for closest to the draft before the info comes out.

7:11 p.m.: And with the first pick, the Astros take Mark Appel, as expected (for three minutes). Going back into the draft has officially paid off for the Stanford righthander.

7:17 p.m.: Cubs going Kris Bryant.

7:18 p.m.: BA office pretty impressed with the Bryant pick. The man can hit.

7:19 p.m.: The top three players in the draft are going in the top three picks. Jonathan Gray is expected to go to the Rockies.

7:20 p.m.: The first three picks, if Gray goes to the Rockies as expected, is bad news for the Twins. They had an outside shot that one of the top three prospects would fall. Instead, they have to pick between a large number of players who are grouped behind the top three.

7:23 p.m.: We know what Jonathan Gray’s first purchase will be.

7:25 p.m.: The Twins are taking the best high school pitcher in the draft.

7:28 p.m.: The Indians were projected to take Colin Moran in Jim Callis’ final mock draft.

7:30 p.m.: Jeff Luhnow after expressing confidence the Astros would sign Mark Appel, also told BA correspondent and Houston Chronicle Astros’ beat writer that he won’t be rushed.

7:32 p.m.:

7:35 p.m.: Colin Moran misses out on the Indians but he won’t fall far.

7:50 p.m.:

7:51 p.m.:

7:55 p.m.: Royals pick is the first pick that made everyone in the BA office’s jaws drop.

7:56 p.m.: The Royals seem to be the team that is spreading its money around. We had Hunter Dozier No. 39 on the BA 500.

8:00 p.m.

8:02 p.m.:

8:05 p.m. And with the next pick

8:12 p.m.: BA office pretty happy with the Dominic Smith pick. Athletic 1B who has a sweet swing. Lots of misses among first-round high school first baseman over the first 30 years of the draft, but since 2000, the track record for the few first-round first baseman taken has been quite good. 8:13 p.m.: Along those lines.

8:19 p.m: Very emotional moment on MLB Network as D.J. Peterson is clearly choked up as he gets congratulations from his brother Dustin Peterson after he’s taken 12th overall by the Mariners. 8:20 p.m.

8:21 p.m.: John Manuel fave Hunter Renfroe will be next off the board.

8:25 p.m. Instant analysis

8:31 p.m.: Interesting trivia from the college game.

8:32 p.m.:

8:36 p.m.:

8:37 p.m.:

8:40 p.m.: Phillies happy to see Crawford fall to them.

8:45 p.m.: And Crawford analysis

8:54 p.m. After Tim Anderson is taken by the White Sox, another Anderson is slated to go next.

8:57 p.m.: We agree

9:00 p.m.: And the scoops keep coming.

9:05 p.m.: Arkansas’ Ryne Stanek is the player falling in this year’s draft. Was ranked 13th on our BA 500, now how fallen out of the top 20. 9:06 p.m.:

9:06 p.m.: Aaron Fitt was very happy with the Marco Gonzalez pick.

9:13 p.m.: With the next pick

9:17 p.m: Here’s an advanced look at two picks in one tweet.

9:18 p.m.: Nick Ciuffo’s ear wiggling on this year’s draft falls well short of Courtney Hawkins backflip at last year’s draft. 9:21 p.m.:

  9:23 p.m.:

9:43 p.m.: Where the Giants first-round pick is going to play is up in the air.

9:45 p.m.:

9:50 p.m.: Usually picks get tougher to pick as the first round goes along

9:58 p.m.: Ryne Stanek fell more than anyone else in the first round, but that’s good news for the Rays.

10:03 p.m.: The first round of the draft is almost finished.

10:04 p.m.: Braves on the clock

10:13 p.m.:

10:20 p.m.: The final pick of the first round is Ian Clarkin. The first round takes three hours, eight minutes.
