High School Top 100: Groome-Pint Debate Headlines Class of ’16

Despite the long, thorough showcase circuit, many questions about the 2016 high school class remain unanswered. This ranking includes countless promising athletes, many of whom could leap forward in the spring. This is merely a snapshot of where these players line up at this point in time.

The class has three clear strengths: pitchers, outfielders and left-side infielders. New Jersey lefthander Jason Groome ranks as the top prospect in the class. He draws comparisons to Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw at the same age, thanks to his physicality and electric three-pitch mix, which is highlighted by arguably the best curveball in the class.

Kansas righty Riley Pint is also in the mix to be the first prep player drafted. Pint has the raw materials to develop into a frontline starter, with an elite fastball and flashes of promise with his breaking ball and changeup. Over the summer, the debate between Pint and Groome began to take shape. They both have the potential to be special players, and Groome and Pint could certainly reverse spots by the time the draft rolls around.

In conversations with scouts in recent weeks, it has become clear that many more scouts think of Pint with more caution. Some decision-makers envision Pint moving to the bullpen, making note of the across-body finish to his arm action, and head whack as he finishes his delivery. Pint also has a tendency to stay tall and land upright, which gives him the balance he needs to reach high velocities, but also gives him trouble locating his stuff down in the strike zone. Even with these concerns, it's difficult to envision a scenario in which a healthy Pint slips outside of the top five picks in next June's draft.

There's upside in this outfield class. The Southern California duo of Blake Rutherford and Mickey Moniak brings to mind the top two outfielders in the 2013 draft class, Austin Meadows and Clint Frazier. Both brought offensive promise and the potential to play center field to the table. The same is true for Moniak and Rutherford, who played together for USA Baseball's 18U national team that won the World Baseball Softball Confederation World Cup in September.

Rutherford has an extensive track record of offensive performance. Previously known more for his speed and contact skills, he grew into his power as a rising senior, slowing down slightly but also showing the potential for a plus bat and plus power. Moniak performed all summer and fall. He's an all-fields hitter with exceptional timing and pitch recognition skills. He's an outstanding defensive center fielder right now and a plus runner. Many scouts project him to develop a 60-grade hit tool, though some are even more aggressive with their evaluations.

Moniak and Rutherford are both committed to UCLA, and the Bruins are the only college team with two top-five commits. Vanderbilt, whose current freshman class topped our recruiting rankings, has three of the top 12 players committed: lefties Groome and Braxton Garrett and righty Ian Anderson.

The Commodores have seven commits among the Top 100, one more than North Carolina. The Tar Heels' class includes Anderson's 18U national team teammate, righthander Austin Bergner, and Colorado righty Bo Weiss, whose father Walt is the Rockies' manager and a former North Carolina shortstop.
