2014 State Draft Report: South Carolina

The makeup of the talent in the Palmetto State is in stark contrast to last year, when the high school class carried the production for the state with a thin college crop. This year the college crop has depth and talent at the top of the draft with a strong group of juniors from South Carolina who have been three-year starters. But the class is hurt by Clemson’s poor draft prospects, as righthander Daniel Gossett was the only Tiger to make the 500.

The college crop was hamstrung by a pair of prominent pitcher injuries; Chad Sobotka, who was considered a candidate to go in the top two rounds with a healthy spring, didn't throw a pitch in game action all spring and Ben Smith, who was a top-five round talent, underwent Tommy John.

Behind Holmes, who will likely become one of the highest-drafted prep righthanders in the history of the state, the high school talent is considered thin, but next year should provide a much stronger prep crop.

Outside of the top 500 players from the state, prep righthander Charlie Barnes has at least an average breaking ball that he throws for strikes with an 86-88 mph fastball. Infielder Henry Davis shows some athleticism with an average arm.
