2013 State Draft Report: Arizona

Talent in the Desert State this year stands out most for its bloodlines. The top high school players in the state all have relatives with baseball ties. Desert Ridge High shortstop Riley Unroe is the son of Tim, a longtime minor leaguer who spent parts of five years in the big leagues. Gilbert High third baseman Dustin Peterson is expected to be the second player in his family drafted in 2013, following older brother D.J., a slugging third baseman now at New Mexico who should be a first-round pick. Hamilton High first baseman Cody Bellinger is the son of Clay, who won two World Series rings with the Yankees.

***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

The state does not have a surefire first-rounder this year, and the talent in the high school class is notably better than the college class. Arizona failed to make regionals this season after winning the College World Series in 2012. Arizona State is in the postseason, and the Sun Devils will likely have more players drafted than the Wildcats, too. As usual, the state has a solid number of junior college prospects.
