2013 Draft State Report: Oklahoma

Oklahoma righthander Jonathan Gray could become the second No. 1 overall selection in the state’s history, joining Oral Roberts righty Mike Moore (1981). Righthander Alex Gonzalez is the Golden Eagles’ best prospect since Moore, and he and Yukon High catcher Jonathan Denney could team with Gray to give the Sooner State three first-rounders--something else that has happened just once before, in 1971.

***** One for the books
**** Banner year
*** Solid, not spectacular
** Not up to par
* Nothing to see here
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

College pitchers Jason Hursh (Oklahoma State), Dillon Overton (Oklahoma) and Teddy Stankewicz (Seminole State JC) all should factor into the top two rounds, while high school third basemen Trey Michalczewski (Jenks) and Drew Ward (Leedey) could come off the board in the third.

One complication cropped up with Gray in the days before the draft as word came out that he and another pitcher had tested positive for the banned stimulant Adderall. The test was not expected to affect Gray’s draft status.
