Game At A Glance: UC Irvine 5, Cal State Fullerton 4

Turning Point: UC Irvine first baseman Taylor Holiday admitted he leaned into a Bryan Harris two-seam fastball to lead off the bottom of the 13th, prompting Fullerton coach George Horton to lose his cool and get ejected. Though Holiday was later gunned down at the plate, getting the leadoff batter on base started the rally.

The Hero:Bryan Petersen has now delivered UC Irvine’s only two walk-off hits of the season, both historic: one against Wichita State in the super-regional to send the Anteaters to Omaha, the other Monday night to end the longest game in CWS history.

You May Not Have Noticed: In a game that had everything, center field defense was one of the most impressive facets. Irvine’s Ollie Linton is the 21st Century answer to Bob “Death to Flying Things” Ferguson, as he made five putouts in a six-inning mid-game stretch. His opposite number, Clark Hardman, outshined him in perhaps his last college game, making seven putouts, including a sprawling, diving catch to end a first-and-third, two-outs Anteaters rally in the bottom of the fifth.
