Game At A Glance: North Carolina 3, Louisville 1

Turning Point: Chris Dominguez did a nice job charging Garrett Gore’s second-inning chopper and fielding it cleanly, but he rushed the throw to first base and threw it wildly, allowing the two eventual winning runs to score. Had Dominguez’ throw been on line, the inning would have been over with the score tied 1-1.

The Hero: Luke Putkonen matched his longest outing of the year (seven innings) and his career high for strikeouts (seven). The Tar Heels were in desperate need of a strong outing from one of their starters, and Putkonen came through with their season on the line.

You May Not Have Noticed: When righthanded reliever Rob Wooten relieved Putkonen to start the eighth, he tied UNC’s single-season record with his 44th appearance. Wooten got the first two outs easily, but Louisville put two runners aboard with two outs. Closer Andrew Carignan relieved him and struck out Isaiah Howes on four pitches–three of them 94 mph fastballs. Howes entered the game hitting .396, but he struck out in all four plate appearances, giving him 70 whiffs in 71 games this season.
