The Deal
The Mets acquired major league outfield depth and the Athletics gained a 40-man roster spot in a trade that sent 26-year-old Collin Cowgill to New York for Double-A third baseman Jefry Marte.

Signed by the Mets the same summer as fellow international prospects Wilmer Flores and Cesar Puello, Marte has moved more or less in-step with that duo through the New York system. Unlike Flores and Puello, however, Marte did not join the 40-man roster following the 2011 season, and he's passed untaken through two Rule 5 drafts since then. Marte hit a career-high nine homers and drew a career-high 43 walks while playing at Double-A for the first time in 2012, though he doesn't excite scouts with his bat speed or defensive prowess, and most evaluators peg him as an extra bat or part-time player at third base, first base or perhaps left field. Whereas he once committed 49 errors as an 18-year-old with low Class A Savannah in 2009, Marte has improved his defensive efficiency dramatically and now rates as an average defender at third base. He has hit minor league lefties hard in the past two seasons, batting .291/.342/.447 with eight homers in 301 plate appearances versus southpaws.

Cowgill could be just about the perfect reserve outfielder because he defends all three positions, throws well and runs the bases intelligently with 71 steals in 76 tries at the Triple-A level. He won't offer much in the way of power, and his feel for hitting comes and goes because of a sweepy swing. Cowgill lost nearly 300 points of OPS between and 2011 and 2012 when he switched Pacific Coast League affiliates from hitter-friendly Reno to pitcher-friendly Sacramento.
