| The Pirates continue to bid for their first playoff spot in 20 years and added a potential answer to their first-base mix by acquiring Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins. They also received righthander Kyle Kaminska while giving up outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and their competitive-balance draft pick, which will be the second pick after the end of the first round. The competitive-balance lottery pick right now would be No. 33 overall. That choice carried a value of $1.525 million in 2012, an amount that will be adjusted upward based on how much MLB's revenues increase this year. |

| Gorkys Hernandez, of Age: 24. Born: Sep 7, 1987 in Guiria, Venezuela. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 190. Bats: R. Throws: R. Career Transactions: Signed as nondrafted free agent by Tigers, April 30, 2005 ... Traded by Tigers with RHP Jair Jurrjens to Braves for SS Edgar Renteria, Oct. 29, 2007 ... Traded by Braves with LHP Jeff Locke and RHP Charlie Morton to Pirates for OF Nate McLouth, June 3, 2009.
Hernandez has been traded three times in his career, going from the Tigers to the Braves in a package for Edgar Renteria after the 2007 season and from Atlanta to the Pirates as part of the Nate McLouth deal in June 2009. He's a quality defender with outstanding range and an strong arm in center field, but that's where his strengths end. He doesn't maximize his plus speed on the bases, and he doesn't hit for enough power or average or control the strike zone particularly well. |

| Kyle Kaminska, rhp Age: 23Born: Oct 5, 1988 in Wauseon, Ohio Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 180. Bats: L. Throws: R. School: Naperville (Ill.) Central HS Career Transactions: Selected by Marlins in 25th round of 2007 draft; signed July 11, 2007.
Kaminksa is a fringe prospect who signed for $120,000 as a 25th-round pick out of an Illinois high school in 2007. The Marlins moved him from the rotation to the bullpen in 2011. Kaminska, 23, has struggled to succeed above Class A. He throws a lot of strikes with an 89-91 mph fastball and fringy slider, and his 1.28 walks/9 IP ratio is the best in the Double-A Southern League among qualifying pitchers. But opponents are batting a robust .332 against him (70 hits, including nine home runs, in 49 innings), so he's not exactly missing a lot of bats. |
