The Deal
The Tigers traded 2008 first-round pick Ryan Perry, a righthanded reliever, to the Nationals for righthander Collin Balester, the system's top prospect heading into 2007 who has worked as a reliever in each of the past two seasons. Balester has no minor league options remaining, while Perry has one.

Both Balester and Perry spent a portion of 2011 in Triple-A, and Balester has logged 346 innings at that level in the past five seasons, compiling a 4.58 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and strikeout rate of 7.1 per nine innings. He sinks the ball at 91-94 mph and also throws a downer curveball. Perry, who shot from the University of Arizona in 2008 to the Detroit bullpen the following season, fires fastballs in the mid-90s and also owns a quality mid-80s slider. His performance has diminished a bit in each of his three seasons with the Tigers but has the tools to succeed as a set-up man.
