The Deal
The Red Sox added righthanded-hitting Conor Jackson, a four-corners bat perfect for platoon starts and pinch-hitting duty, in a minor trade with the Athletics. Boston surrendered Triple-A reliever Jason Rice, who earned an immediate September callup to audition for a larger role in 2012.

Born: May 13, 1986 in San Bernadino, Calif.

Pawtucket (IL) AAA 4 5 3.69 44 1 4 85.1 77 37 35 6 42 89 1.40

The rare minor league Rule 5 pick to reach the big leagues, Rice has struck out 254 batters in 215 1/3 innings (10.6 per nine) since joining the Red Sox system in 2009. Boston moved him to the bullpen at high Class A that year, but the new role did little to reign in his walk rate, which registered at 4.7 over the past three seasons. Rice sits 92-94 mph with a straight fastball and also throws a fringy curveball from a high three-quarters arm slot. A second pitch would help him battle lefthanders, who hit .279/.382/.372 against him in the International League. Rice will qualify for minor league free agency if Oakland removes him from its 40-man roster prior to the conclusion of the World Series.
