Blue Jays Deal Just-Acquired Napoli To Rangers

The Deal
With general manager Alex Anthopoulos at the helm, the Blue Jays have been one of baseball's most active teams on the trade market. That trend continued when the second-year GM dealt just-acquired catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli to the Rangers for righthanded reliever Frank Francisco. The weekend before, Anthopoulos traded Vernon Wells to the Angels to acquire Napoli (and Juan Rivera). At the Winter Meetings, he parted with No. 2 starter Shaun Marcum to bring back prospect Brett Lawrie from the Brewers.

Francisco joins imports Jon Rauch, Octavio Dotel and Carlos Villanueva in a Jays bullpen brimming with offseason additions. Napoli lends the Rangers depth at catcher, where they relied on Bengie Molina (currently a free agent) and Matt Treanor (re-signed) during their run to the American League pennant in 2010. He provides depth at DH and insurance at first base, as well, in case sophomore Mitch Moreland does not duplicate his rookie success.

In the past year, Anthopoulos traded veterans for prospects like Travis d'Arnaud, Kyle Drabek, Anthony Gose and Lawrie, while also buying low on regulars like Yunel Escobar and Brandon Morrow.
