| The Cardinals' offseason signing of free agent Felipe Lopez made Julio Lugo more than a little redundant on their roster. So just before the start of the 2010 season, St. Louis dealt the veteran middle infielder to the Orioles for a player to be named. The Red Sox still owe the vast majority of the money owed to Lugo (estimated at $8.6 million), whom they signed to a four-year deal in December 2006. Boston grew tired of his lack of production and traded him to the Cardinals on July 22, 2009, netting outfielder Chris Duncan, whom they released about a month later. For Baltimore, Lugo will fill in for the ailing Brian Roberts at second base, while providing more offense at shortstop, where Cesar Izturis will start and Robert Andino had been slated to back him up. With the acquisition of Lugo, though, Andino's future with the club is no longer secure. |
