Mariners, Red Sox Swap Veterans

| Both Bill Hall and Casey Kotchman know the ins and outs of being traded. After all, both veterans were dealt last summer from National to American league clubs. So it's appropriate that Hall and Kotchman have been exchanged for one another in the first trade of 2010. The details: The Red Sox shipped Kotchman, a first baseman who started just 19 times in two months with the club, to the Mariners for Bill Hall, a third baseman/corner outfielder who swings a big stick versus lefthanders. The Red Sox also receive a player to be named as well as $7.15 million to help offset the difference in salaries. Kotchman employs a contact-oriented approach from the left side, showing modest power at his best and no platoon split. He ranges well to both sides at first base, where he's a solidly above-average defender. Hall's chief asset is his positional flexibility—he can cover all four corners and offers the glimmering hope that he can reacquaint himself with the middle of the diamond. He rose through the Brewers system as a middle infielder (he earned his big payday while serving as Milwaukee's shortstop in 2005-06), but he's since shifted to center field and then on to his current job description. Hall has thumped lefties for a career .270/.339/.471 line over 921 plate appearances. His OPS versus righties from 2007-09 reads as .713, .557 and .589. The Red Sox acquired Rookie-ball righthander Miguel Celestino as the player to be named (March 18). |

| Miguel Celestino, rhp Age: 20. Born: Oct. 10, 1989 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 170. Bats: R. Throws: R. Career Transactions: Signed as a nondrafted free agent by Mariners, Dec. 14, 2006.
Celestino pitched for two seasons in the Dominican Summer League, making 42 appearances (25 starts) and going 9-3, 2.78 with a 61-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 87 innings. He allowed only one home run in that time, while generating a 1.6 groundout-to-flyout ratio. Even though his raw performance in his stateside debut was not nearly so eye-popping, Celestino still has size, angle to the plate and 90-91 mph velocity working for him. Like a lot of pitchers with raw arm strength who can sink the ball, he has some feel for his changeup to go with a rudimentary breaking ball. |
