|The Athletics deemed outfielder Rajai Davis the odd man out after the club's acquisition of David DeJesus in trade. Oakland swapped the swift center fielder to the Blue Jays for a pair of Double-A righthanded relievers in Danny Farquhar and Trystan Magnuson.
A righthanded batter, Davis has been more productive versus lefthanded pitchers, batting .292/.347/.402 in 499 career plate appearances. His .694 OPS against righties makes him a less-than-ideal option for everyday play, though he can contribute with his speed and defense.
|Danny Farquhar, rhp
Born: Feb. 17, 1987 in Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Ht.: 5-11. Wt.: 180. Bats: R. Throws: R.
Career Transactions: Selected by Blue Jays in 10th round of 2008 draft; signed June 30, 2008.
Used as closer for Double-A New Hampshire, Farquhar continued to be wildly effective (4.9 walks per nine innings) as a sinker/slider reliever with two distinct arm slots. He prefers to drop down to side-arm and pitch at 88-92 mph with sink. From that angle, he makes use of both sides of the plate and mixes in a low-80s sweeping slider. From his three-quarters slot, Farquhar shows more velocity (up to 95) as well as a different version of his slider, a change and a cutter. He could be an important piece in a quality bullpen, perhaps working as set-up man.
|Trystan Magnuson, rhp
Born: June 6, 1985 in Vancouver, B.C.
Ht.: 6-7. Wt.: 210. Bats: L. Throws: R.
Career Transactions: Selected by Blue Jays in supplemental first round (56th overall) of 2007 draft; signed July 11, 2007.
Drafted as a fifth-year senior, Magnuson has moved essentially one level per season and, consequently, has been older than his competition. His career prospects perked up after a full-time move to the bullpen in 2009, culminating in a fine 2010 season in Double-A that featured six times as many strikeouts (63) as walks (10). Magnuson works ahead of batters with a 92-94 mph sinker that plays up because of his 6-foot-7 stature. He'll mix in a high-80s cutter/slider that's just OK and a splitter that's comfortably below-average. Eastern League lefthanded batters saw Magnuson better than did righties, hitting .281/.320/.380 against him. Compare that with the muted .237/.258/.276 batting line that righties managed.
