| The Red Sox shopped righthander Manny Delcarmen all summer, only to find no takers. It was a different story in August, however. While Delcarmen passed through waivers without being claimed by an American League club, the Rockies over in the National League placed a claim and subsequently worked out a trade for the struggling reliever, sending low Class A righthander Chris Balcom-Miller to Boston. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Chris Balcom-Miller, rhp Age: 21. Born: March 3, 1989 in San Jose. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 210. Bats: R. Throws: R. School: West Valley (Calif.) JC. Career Transactions: Selected by Rockies in sixth round of 2009 draft; signed June 17, 2009.
Balcom-Miller came out firing in his 2009 pro debut, going 4-0, 1.58 in 11 starts for Rookie-level Casper and winning Pioneer League pitcher of the year honors. He sits at 88-92 mph with plus sink and has continued to generate groundball outs in the South Atlantic League, collecting two for every flyout. Balcom-Miller's low-80s changeup and slider grade as at least average, while a herky-jerky delivery helps to disguise the pitches. He paced the SAL with 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings at the time of the trade, while ranking second in opponent average (.214), walks per nine (1.6) and WHIP (0.97). Balcom-Miller appears to be a back-of-the-rotation starter or set-up reliever waiting to happen. |
