| The Deal | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Diamondbacks already have traded their top two starters (Dan Haren and Edwin Jackson) and their closer Chad Qualls (to the Rays for a player to be named) this month, so why not also bid adieu to the pitchers' batterymate, catcher Chris Snyder? Arizona acted on that impulse, while saving a few bucks in the process, by shipping Snyder, Triple-A shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and $3 million to the Pirates for a package containing three marginal big leaguers. Arizona receives the trio of reliever D.J. Carrasco, corner outfielder Ryan Church and middle infielder Bobby Crosby, mostly in an effort to balance the dollars in the transaction. The players are not viewed as fixtures in Phoenix, by any stretch. Crosby will be a free agent after the season, while Carrasco and Church can either be retained at arbitration prices or non-tendered. The emergence of catcher Miguel Montero in Arizona made Snyder more than a little expendable. The 26-year-old, lefty-hitting Montero has batted .311/.375/.474 this season, fresh off a 2009 campaign in which he caught 111 games and produced an .832 OPS. |

| Pedro Ciriaco, ss Age: 24. Position: SS (84 G), 2B (3 G). Born: Sept. 27, 1985 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 160. Bats: R. Throws: R. Career Transactions: Signed as nondrafted free agent by Diamondbacks, Feb. 28, 2003.
Ciriaco has some top-of-the-line tools in his speed and defensive ability. He has yet to put it all together offensively, which made him expendable for the Diamondbacks. A career .279/.314/.355 hitter entering the season in 2,729 minor league at-bats, Ciriaco has yet to play in the majors since signing in 2003 as a 17-year-old. He got off to a slow start due in part to a ligament injury in his thumb, but he heated up in June and July, hitting a combined .295. Scouts report Ciriaco's speed, defense and throwing arm remain above-average, and his speed rates a 70 on the 20-80 scale. However, he has little power and is too free of a swinger to get on base enough to become a consistent factor as a basestealer. |
