| The Orioles acquired veteran righthander Kevin Millwood (plus $3 million) from the Rangers, sending righthander Chris Ray and a player to be named to Texas. The Rangers had been eyeing Double-A lefty Ben Snyder in the Rule 5 draft, so he instantly became the player to be named when the Orioles selected him third overall in the big league phase.
Ray accumulated 49 saves while serving as Baltimore's closer from 2005-07, but he missed most of '08 after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Entering the final year of the five-year, $60 million pact he signed with Texas, Millwood averaged 31 starts per season for the Rangers but saw his strikeout rate degrade as he moved into his mid-30s. He went 48-46, 4.57 in four years with the club. |

| Ben Snyder, lhp Age: 24. Born: July 20, 1985 in Bellevue, Ohio. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 224. Bats: L. Throws: L. School: Ball State. Career Transactions: Selected by Giants in fourth round of 2006 draft; signed June 20, 2006 ... Selected by Orioles from Giants in Rule 5 major league draft, Dec. 10, 2009.
Snyder blossomed after switching to a relief role in Double-A this year, holding lefthanded batters to a ridiculous .146/.198/.197 line over 157 at-bats. That includes a 57-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio and only one home run allowed. It was a different story for Snyder versus righthanders, who clubbed him for an .829 OPS. In shorter relief stints, Snyder sits in the low 90s and spins a quality curveball. His starting background means that he has more experience throwing a changeup than most relievers, but he won't need it much in what figures to be a left-on-left role. He'll battle recent acquisition Clay Rapada for a situational role in Texas' bullpen, but neither lefty can be sent to the minors without clearing waivers. Rapada is out of options, while Snyder remains subject to the guidelines of Rule 5 draft. Snyder's older brother Brad, a Cubs' first-round pick in '03 who currently is a free agent, also attended Ball State. |
