Yankees Deal Brian Bruney For Rule 5 Consideration

| Holding the No. 1 overall pick in the Rule 5 draft, the Nationals agreed to select a player at the Yankees' behest in exchange for veteran righthanded reliever Brian Bruney. Washington selected right fielder Jamie Hoffmann from the Dodgers' Triple-A roster during the Dec. 10 draft and immediately shipped him to New York.
Bruney missed a chunk of the '09 season with elbow trouble and served only as a mop-up reliever during the playoffs. |

Hoffmann is a career .285/.357/.407 hitter in 2,428 at-bats since singing as a nondrafted free agent. "He's a big, physical outfielder with big league experience," said Yankees pro scouting director Billy Eppler following the Rule 5 draft. "Our scouts saw some good things in him, including good defensive ability and a good arm. He runs well for his size, we've got him as a 55 runner at 6-foot-3, 235 (pounds). Kevin Long, our hitting coordinator, looked at him on video and thinks there's a foundation there hitting-wise." He has a chance to stick with the Yankees as an extra outfielder. |
