The United States, Canada and the Czech Republic will play a three-team qualifer for two spots in September’s World Cup in the Netherlands.
The double round-robin tournament will be played from April 9-12 at the Pirates’ spring training home, McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Fla. The U.S. team will be picked at tryouts on April 5-6.
Team USA will be assembled from a group of recently released players who have been participating in spring training. USA Baseball decided it was unfair to rely on independent leaguers—who have played in the past when regular minor leaguers were not able to play—to participate in a tournament when most of them have not started their spring training.
“We think we can look at the available talent and get a representative team,” USA baseball national team director Eric Campbell said.
