Former big leaguer leads Holland over Team USA
After four relatively easy exhibition wins, the professional players on the U.S. Olympic baseball team got their first taste of defeat Monday. Former big leaguer Rikkert Faneyte drove in three runs with a second-inning double, then pitched the ninth to earn the save as The Netherlands defeated Team USA 4-3 on Australia's Gold Coast. It's Team USA's first loss of its six-game exhibition schedule, which concludes Tuesday against Korea. Faneyte, 31, spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with the Giants and Rangers from 1993-96, hitting .174-0-9 in 132 at-bats. But he cleared the bases with a double in the second off Team USA starter Jon Rauch (White Sox). Rauch got the loss, giving up five runs in four innings. The Netherlands' other run came when right fielder Dirk van't Kloost scored on a double by third baseman Reily Legito. Team USA tried to answer the Dutch offense, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Third baseman Mike Kinkade (Orioles) doubled home Ernie Young (Cardinals) and John Cotton (Rockies), who had both singled off The Netherlands' starter, Jurriaan Lobbezoo. Dutch coach Pat Murphy said earlier this summer that Lobbezoo was his team's No. 2 starter. Reliever Ken Brauckmiller got the win for the Dutch with 2 2/3 scoreless innings. The U.S. scored again in the ninth off Faneyte when shortstop Adam Everett (Astros), who has alternated with Travis Dawkins (Reds) at the leadoff spot for Team USA, doubled and scored on Brad Wilkerson's single. Wilkerson, who has batted third in every game for Team USA, had three of the Americans' nine hits. "You have to give credit to the Dutch team," said Team USA manager Tommy Lasorda, who saw his team strand nine runners on base. "We definitely had opportunities offensively tonight, but just couldn't capitalize on them." Rick Krivda (Orioles) came on in the sixth and limited the Netherlands to one hit in three innings of shutout of relief. Bobby Seay (Devil Rays) pitched a scoreless ninth.
