George, Mientkiewicz make U.S. 3-0

Team USA got another indication of how good host Australia's pitching could be in the 2000 Olympic Games. It also got another win in its pre-Olympic exhibition play on Australia's Gold Coast.

Team USA had just three hits, two of them belonging to first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins). One of them was a two-run homer in the top of the first, and Team USA scored three unearned runs without a hit in the sixth to take a 5-3 decision. Team USA is now 3-0 with consecutive wins against the host nation and plays South Africa next.

Lefthander Chris George (Royals) pitched three hitless, scoreless innings in relief of lefthander C.C. Sabathia (Indians) to get the win for the Americans. Another lefthander, Bobby Seay (Devil Rays), pitched the ninth for the save.

"For the third straight game it was our pitching that was the difference," said Team USA manager Tommy Lasorda. "George and Seay pitched well in relief, and we were able to scratch together enough runs to get the win."

Team USA's game-winning rally in the sixth started when Aussie righthander Tom Becker (Tigers) walked American catcher Marcus Jensen (Twins) to lead off the inning. Becker then hit Brent Abernathy (Blue Jays) with a pitch. American shortstop Adam Everett laid down a good sacrifice bunt, and Australian third baseman Rodney Van Buizen threw the ball away, scoring both Jensen and Abernathy and giving Team USA a 4-3 lead. Everett, who advanced to third on the bad throw, scored on Becker's wild pitch.

Sabathia gave up six hits and three runs in five innings, walking none while striking out five. Team USA used its third different lineup, though Lasorda has been consistent by starting the same three outfielders every game. Ernie Young (Cardinals) has started in left field, with Anthony Sanders (Mariners) in center and Brad Wilkerson (Expos) in right.
