Oswalt shines in exhibition win
Team USA moved to 2-0 in its six-game exhibition series leading up to the Sydney Olympics, defeating host Australia 3-1 Friday on Australia's Gold Coast. Winning pitcher Roy Oswalt (Astros) struck out seven and gave up five hits in four shutout innings, walking only one. Team USA's offense was led by a pair of solo home runs by outfielder Brad Wilkerson (Expos) and third baseman Mike Kinkade (Orioles). Wilkerson's shot gave Team USA a 1-0 lead in the first inning, while Kinkade's homer came in the sixth. Kinkade also scored the team's other run. He was hit by a pitch and advanced to third with some good baserunning after a grounder to third by Doug Mientkiewicz (Twins). He scored on a fourth-inning double by catcher Marcus Jensen (Twins). Team USA received strong pitching for the second straight game. Following Oswalt, righthander Matt White (Devil Rays), lefthander Tim Young (Red Sox), and righthander Shane Heams (Tigers) limited Australia to one run in 4 1/3 innings. Submarining closer Todd Williams (Mariners) recorded the final two outs for his first save. "Our pitching was once again outstanding tonight," said Team USA manager Tommy Lasorda. "It was a solid victory over a very good Australian team." Former major league pitcher Mark Hutton was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Clayton Byrne and Glen Reeves, who both played in the independent Atlantic League this year, had two hits apiece for Australia. The two teams will play each other again Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Team USA's Palm Meadows training facility. Pre-Olympic Exhibition Game 2
