Baseball America's 2002 Preseason All-America Team
DURHAM, N.C.--Four different Atlantic Coast Conference schools provide four players to Baseball America's 2002 Preseason All-America first team. That's only slightly more than preseason No. 1 Stanford provides all by itself. Scouting directors of major league clubs vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and major league potential. The first round of the 2001 draft featured nine players who were BA preseason All-Americans, including Middle Tennessee State's Dewon Brazelton (Devil Rays), Auburn's Gabe Gross (Blue Jays) and Southern California's Mark Prior (Cubs). Scouting directors feel certain Rutgers righthander Bobby Brownlie will follow that path to the first round. He was the only unanimous selection among the 18 ballots received. Next in the vote totals were ACC infielders Russ Adams of North Carolina and Jeff Baker of Clemson, who each had 99 out of a possible 108 points. The ACC talent joining them on the first team includes Georgia Tech catcher Tyler Parker and Duke first baseman Larry Broadway. Three Cardinal players were selected this year, though, a historic occasion. While several schools have had two players on the preseason A-A list, no school has seen three players selected since Fresno State in 1989. The players that year were shortstop Eddie Zosky and outfielders Tom Goodwin and Steve Hosey, who all became first-round picks. The 2002 team includes two Stanford outfielders in sophomore Carlos Quentin and Jason Cooper, a junior who was selected as a DH. The third Cardinal, righthander Jeremy Guthrie, was a third-round pick in the 2001 draft as a draft-eligible sophomore. The Cardinal also placed second baseman Chris O'Riordan and lefthander Tim Cunningham on the second team and outfielder Sam Fuld on the third team. Notre Dame outfielder Brian Stavisky was also draft-eligible as a sophomore in 2001 but wasn't selected until the 33rd round (Cubs). He returns for his junior season and is the only repeat choice on the preseason first team, receiving more support than any other outfielder. The other position players on the team include South Carolina shortstop Drew Meyer and 2001 Freshman of the Year Michael Aubrey, Tulane's two-way star who was selected as an outfielder. Two pitchers who played with Aubrey on Team USA last summer, Miami's Kiki Bengochea and Southern California's Anthony Reyes, join him on the first team. Rounding out the first team is lefthander Jeff Francis, the first player from a Canadian college ever selected to the list. Francis, who went 12-3, 0.92 for NAIA member British Columbia last year, was the MVP of the summer Alaska League and the National Baseball Congress World Series in 2001. First Team
